About Instant Korma

Nothing to do with the Beatles.

Nothing to do with Viktor Frankl.
Nothing to do, so wrote this blog.

I hope you find it useful; unlikely though.
I hope you find it amusing; well I can hope.
I hope you find it; Google.

Saveurs des Indes in La Hulpe

I had heard some unconfirmed rumours of another good Curry House, not a million miles from Krishna in Overijse.

From a Flemish area to a French speaking one, not that that maters one iota, I am an equal opportunities Curry snob.

A little searching of resto.be and Google showed me only one indian restaurant in the area - The Saveurs des Indes, no website could be found, but their details are;

Rue Général de Gaulle 1 - 1310 LA HULPE

Tel.: 3226542878

So cut to the chase you say, well this is quite a different place to its near neighbour Krishna, it  feels a little more like a proper restaurant, proper tablecloths, wine menu; its also quite small but the tables are well spaced out - I dont think it would feel crowded.

Menu was fairly standard British Curry fair - which is exactly what I want.

I had a Chicken Madras which was satifyingly hot, not too large a portion and very very tasty. My wife had a Lamb Tikka Masala which I tasted and can testify to being super.

Ill be back and certainly write some more about this place - but put it on your list.

I though after SpiceNtice I wouldnt try another curry pack, but I did - and by jove I am glad!

Aha, you may remember my unfortunate incident with the curry kit in a box (SpiceNtice) bought from those lovely guys at Stonemanor (it isn’t their fault - you can buy Pot Noodles from there also).

Anyway - I thought that would be my last experience with Curry in a box, but one of my work buddies sent me a link to some other chaps, on the world wide interweb. KingofCurries.com

Now, I liked the name (but then I liked the SpiceNTice name also - and look where that got me), so I thought I’d chance my arm.

I ordered a Korma (shocker!) and a Dhansak, and on their website, they seem to know a bit about the origins etc (could have ripped it off wikipedia I suppose).

When it arrived I was a half excited, half dreading the result. The packaging was nicely done, the spices smelled pretty pungent so I got down to it.

The Korma was a triumph, I actually went for a very spicy one and it was superb, the Dhansak took a little longer to make but was a little cracker.

These guys know their stuff, and the recipes were fairly straightforward, even for a culinary halfwit like myself.

So Internet Curries - done.

Next - the menu at Krishna, an Indian in LaHulpe and another dreadful non-curry in Brussels.

Stay Tuned!

Mad Curry - Who Knew?

Here I am , in Belgium, writing about Curry. Wanting Curry, angry that I have to travel all the way across Brussels to get a half decent one - am i mad about it?

Turns out that Mad Curry was a popular Belgian Beat Combo (dont know what that means, but I recall hearing it on the TV as a kid).

Website here describing the band, made by a fan - probably mad.

Looking at the history I begin to detect a trend - they have worked with musicians from Chromatic Banana, what about Distended  Sickel, Gregarious Pickle, Instant Korma!

An Expat in Brussels - Essential Survival Kit

I just found this website - spookily it hits the spot for my Beligian Expat needs.

http://home.expatlist.be

It has the local news translated into English - I dont feel like a total muppet listening to my colleagues talk about a bank going bust without me knowing. It has international news, the Belgian Traffic news in English, an updated list of where the speed cameras are, weather, TV radio, Whats on in Brussels - a super little thing it is.

I am liking it a lot, just hope they dont start charging for it.

The Curry House in Overijse

I heard there were a couple of Indian Restaurants in Overijse - a polular Expat suburb, aha my sight swere set high.

The Curry House
Brusselsesteenweg 651
3090 OVERIJSE

The Curry House is a stones throw from the E411, and next time you drive past it - throw a stone (I dont mean that - I am just trying to be cute).

Sadly the Curry was not really a Curry (and actually the house wasnt a house either) - The sauces so mild as to be just a peppery soup.

They had also managed to make the chicken very rubbery.

All in all - disappointing - ho hum, on to Krishna down the road!

Krishna in Overijse - you little Beauty!

Ok - I have no sense for Drama, I have given it all away in the title.

The first success in my search, the Krishna Indian Restaurant in Overijse was a success.

I had a Chicken Dhansak and it was a triumph, a proper, spicey, tasty authentic Curry.

Who would have beleived it, well, the other brits who were there - it looks like it is some sort of business travellers secret.

My mate had a korma, which was to be fair rather disappointing - (too mild, too glutenous).

But we have a good start here - I will be progressing through the menu, keep tuned for details.

The Bad Curry Kit Chronicles - Spice Entice

Again, I am posting on events in the past, and in no particular order - is that against the rules - not sure.

Anyway - I was stalking around the local (Belgian =- Delhaize, Super GB etc) supermarkets trying to find some good fresh spice to make my own Curry (when I had been so disappointed by the local restaurants). As you will find if you care to look - they have ‘curry powder’ and that’s your lot.

I thought - this is where my old friend StoneManor will come to my rescue - so there I went. Now I can tell you with some relief that I was able to score a fix of proper spice, and armed with my Indian Cookbook - I was away (more of that later). But just as I was on my way out I say some little boxes ‘ Spice Entice’ - these promised to deliver a proper curry, based upon great fresh spices, with the recipe in the box - they were about three euros. I though fantastic - job done.

I put the Shwartz spices back and picked up a Chicken Jalfrezi, A Lamb Madras and a Kheema Karai - follow the simple instructions and enjoy the perfect curry - Salvation in a little box.

Now I have to say I was a bit suspicious when I opened the things and the spices had the aroma of sawdust, or sawdust with a little bit of white pepper. But anyway I persevered, confident that it would do what it said on the tin.

It didn’t.

As I was tasting it along the way, I was thinking, hmm the flavours are just developing - it’ll taste great in the end. It didn’t. It did taste quite chemically (not a word I know, I know).

Of course I thought - its me (see previous post) - Ill get the missus to try it - she will make a better job of it.

She didn’t.

The last box went in the bin.

The Search is on (am I the Stanley Kubrick of Curry lovers?)

I saw a programme on TV a couple of weeks ago - it was called ”Boxes”, and was the story of a chap studying the life and works of Kubrick through study of his archives. It was quite an interesting programme actually - it has been posted in Google in low-res form here .

Basic story is that Kubrik was in addition to being a genius, a basic headcase detail maniac. Of course these two things may be linked.

For a scene in Eyes wide shut, Kubrik needed a shot of a doorway where the main characters would breeze through (the point is, this was far from a pivotal part of the movie, just cinematographic garnish - parsley if you will) but Kubrik sent out his photo scout guy to photograph hundreds of such locations so Kubrik could identify the perfect one.

So thats my ambition; to scrutinise the curry establishments of Belgium and document for you here the good the bad and the ugly.

Think I can manage it ?, I for one am sceptical, but lets give it a try.
